Be like Moses

Moses in the bible says let my people go! Moses aka Harriet Tubman took things into her own hands and helped free people. Both were courageous, both were leaders and undoubtedly despite the fact that they were successful they were also afraid.

This fictional book teaches about the life of Harriet Tubman from her enslavement in MD to her escape in Philadelphia. While this book aims to teach young readers about her life and resilience through a detailed story, it is the underlying story which makes it even more powerful. Slavery was a cruel time in our nations history and there is no way to paint a pretty picture. However one can learn about the faith and determination that existed and continues to exist in African Americans from this book. The author immerses a story about Harriet's fear of escaping and being a leader with her faith and hope in God. Throughout the story whenever Harriet is in question, she realizes that the answers are within and around her as God speaks or gently reminds. "I'm going to see you through, child." When she says, I dont know who to trust, God responds , "search for my face in theirs and for my hands in their work."

Her lines are noted in black while the voice/God is in a larger print. In addition to a well written story Kadir Nelson's illustrates the time period in detail from Harriet's frail hands to muted colors during her time of enslavement to the bold bright colors of her freedom.
